Coronavirus Update

SHSU Wesley Foundation

March 23, 2020

Know that the staff and leaders of the SHSU Wesley Foundation will continue to work during this time to minister to you and all the students at SHSU. We are in this together, and we will see it through together. We will not give in to a spirit of fear and isolationism, but instead embrace a spirit of hope, peace, humor, camaraderie, and faith-building. We are not alone. God is with us. The safety and well-being of our crew and guests remains a high priority.

On Sunday, March 22, we were instructed by the Texas Annual Conference to close down the building and cease all events and activities, as our society and church continues to navigate the Coronavirus epidemic.

From this point on, we are establishing regular ways to connect electronically.

The CDC always has up-to-date information in general, including symptoms and prevention.
SHSU also has regarding their responses on their site: https://www.shsu.edu/katsafe/coronavirus

We will be reinforcing such efforts in the coming weeks.

Since SHSU has declared one more week of Spring Break, March 15-21, our small groups will have one more week off. HOWEVER, we still plan to have dinner (6p) and worship (7p) on Wednesday night, March 18, as normal. While we believe in being vigilant and calm in times like this, we will also continue to provide times of normalcy and inspiration.

Our two baked potato fundraisers that were to be at Onalaska UMC and Paul Horton UMC on March 22 may tentatively be rescheduled, pending feedback/decisions of the host churches.

The Board of Directors meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, March 17 is cancelled. The Board will meet at their next scheduled meeting on Tuesday, May 12.

The Madisonville UMC potato fundraiser scheduled for March 29 is still on, pending further information and development at the local church level and at the societal level.

We presume Sammypalooza (March 25) will be cancelled, thus, we will have dinner and worship on March 25. Stay tuned for more details.

Our first annual crawfish broil, set for Sunday, March 22, is postponed into April/Finals Week, pending Council decision.

The Wesley Sunday Fun Day that was scheduled for March 22 is still scheduled to happen, starting at 6pm with free pizza.

As far as we know: All Paws In (Sat, April 4), Resurrection Week Worship (Mon, April 6), the Sammy Awards (Weds, April 8), the April 26 potato fundraisers and End of Year Event (also, 4/26) are still scheduled. We will keep you posted as these events change.

Nominations for the Student Council will still begin on Weds, April 1. The written sign-ups on the Student Life Board will close at 7pm on Weds, April 8.

Our spring food drive with the campus ministries will still happen, but the start and end dates will both be pushed back.

The Wesley Foundation will remain open daily with normal hours as able starting on Monday, March 16th. We will see to it that all 5 of our hourly staff will not lose hours, despite major decisions by SHSU.

We will be instituting semi-daily cleaning routines to disinfect areas in the building where exposure to germs and viruses is high. Examples include: the kitchen counter, all sink handles, all door panels and knobs, computer keyboards, tables.

If you are in Huntsville, if you are not sick, and have not been in a situation where your risk for exposure to Covid-19 is high in the past 14 days (eg. Airports, close contact to someone with Covid 19), you are welcome to come the Wesley Foundation.

We ask all persons entering the Wesley Foundation to wash their hands immediately in either the kitchen or the restrooms with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds.

We recommend limiting physical contact (handshakes, hugs, high fives), and utilizing air high-fives, Vulcan live-long-and-prosper gestures, and double-handed L-pointing.

If you have any symptoms of Covid-19, then please stay home. If you are sick and need something, please reach out and we will try to help you in any way we can. See CDC Prevention and recommendations linked below.

“It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo; the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened? But in the end, it is only a passing thing. This darkness, this shadow will pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think Mr. Frodo, I do understand, I know now: folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t; they kept going, because they were holding onto something…that’s there’s good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.”
-Samwise the Brave, from the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

“Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our lives into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” -Romans 5:3-5

We're in this together, God is still God, and God is still good, and this will all be behind us in due time!

Feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions!

Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
